Community Leeks: NDG Seed Savers and Exchange

In an effort to build a community of environmentally conscious citizens we’ve created Community Leeks as a platform for people to share thoughts, stories, recipes and resources.

Today’s Community Leeks entry is from a local environmental initiative: The NDG Seed Savers and Exchange. Seed Savers Exchange is a non-profit organization who’s mission is to save and share seeds in an effort to maintain our natural biodiversity. Mass farming practices, the loss of ecosystems and consequently, the loss of many food and medicinal plant/seed species have inspired two passionate women – Jacqueline and Tanya – to become ambassadors for seed saving and exchanges here in Montreal. Their vision and action are inspiring, and provide us with the opportunity to become part of a larger movement to help preserve and protect our natural world. Jacqueline and Tanya, thank you for sharing your story.  Continue reading “Community Leeks: NDG Seed Savers and Exchange”

Interview: LUVMOTHER

In an effort to build a community of environmentally conscious citizens we’ve created Community Leeks as a platform for people to share thoughts, stories, recipes and resources.

Today’s Community Leeks entry is our first interview. We wanted to examine the concept, ethos and vision of a local children’s clothing company, luvmother. Kevin, the founder and designer behind this brand, shares with us his perspective and insight on the clothing industry and how he came to offer a more sustainable, ethically-sourced product. Thank you Kevin for taking the time to share. It became clear to us that the integrity, honesty and respect that serve as the foundation of luvmother are indeed a reflection of your character.  Continue reading “Interview: LUVMOTHER”

His very active lifestyle and rock climbing adventures led him to create a nutrient-rich, protein packed snack that is 100% natural. His love for nature has guided his path in academia and lifestyle choices. Thank you Delano for sharing with us your story and this deliciously satisfying plant-based recipe!

Perspective Piece: February Warmed With Love

In an effort to build a community of environmentally conscious citizens we’ve created Community Leeks as a platform for people to share thoughts, stories, recipes and resources. Today we bring you an additional entry for this extra special day. Our fourth piece captures the essence of life as a first generation Canadian just after World War II. A former teacher, talented seamstress, baker and art/drama enthusiast, Mary Ellen Viau – a woman who can always make something from nothing – shares with us the invaluable work ethic, gratitude and unassuming nature of her parents and their generation; a philosophy that is even more sacred in today’s consumerist society.
