WARNING: This High Performance Plant-Powered Shake is NOT for the faint of heart. This is my go-to morning shake recipe that is formulated to provide all the energy and building blocks needed for the serious endurance athlete looking to fuel and recover from their intense workouts.
Ok… I might be laying it on a little thick… To be honest, I came up with this shake recipe for my hubs (Michael), who’s an athlete but also a bottom-less pit that needs a crazy amount of energy to fuel even his body’s most basic needs, let alone his workouts! This morning shake recipe initially started out rather simply, but has evolved over time into a powerhouse of plant-based superfoods that our morning routine cannot go without. So for all the people in Michael’s office who see him slurping these down each morning and are wondering what on Earth is in there… Now you know!
Oh, and don’t judge a shake by it’s colour… this shake actually tastes GREAT, and is probably one of the most nutritious meals you can start your day off with. Check it out!
Serves: 1 massive shake (or two regular shakes)
Prep time: 5 mins
Blend time: 2 mins
1/3 cup rolled oats (dry)
2 tsp spirulina
1 Tbsp maca powder
1 Tbsp whole flax seeds
1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp algae oil (such as Nutra-vege)
1-2 scoop(s) vegan protein powder (such as Iron Vegan)
1 large handful of spinach or kale (raw or frozen)
1 frozen banana
1/2 cup frozen pineapple or mango
1 cup mixed frozen berries
3 Medjool dates (pitted)
1 Brazil nut
30 oz of coconut water (such as Thirsty Buddha) OR plain water
Optional: 1 “thumb” sized nub of fresh turmeric
- Throw all the ingredients into your high speed blender and blend on HIGH for 2 minutes, until perfectly smooth.
- Divide into 2 servings if desired.
Sometimes I serve 1/2 of the shake for pre-training and the other 1/2 for post-training. Other times, Michael (my husband) will drink this entire shake in one sitting!
I also often throw in his vitamin D and B12 supplements in pill form – might as well blend it all in there!
