Spirulina Nice Cream Bowl

Happy St Patrick’s Day folks!   In honour of today’s Irish celebration, we wanted to bring you something GREEN… and so we’re serving up our Spirulina Nice Cream Bowl!

Spirulina is a blue-green algae superfood with a potent nutritional profile, we add it to smoothies, fresh juices, and nice cream for a powerful dose of vitamins (vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, E, and K), antioxidants, and complete plant-protein.  Spirulina also helps with detoxification, and boosts energy.

Did you know Spirulina has the highest concentration of protein of any food?  Yes – you read that correctly.  With 65-71% protein by weight, and a full amino acid profile, this green superfood is truly nature’s protein powder.*

For this recipe, we whip up a batch of “nice cream” – which is essentially just frozen bananas blended up thick and creamy.  A healthier, tastier, and cruelty-free alternative to dairy-based ice creams.  And the best part about our Spirulina Nice Cream Bowl?  You can have it for breakfast, guilt-free!

Serves: 2
Prep time: 5 minutes

  • 4 frozen ripe bananas
  • 1 navel orange, juiced
  • 1 Tbsp Spirulina powder
  • Toppings of choice

  1. In your high speed blender (such as the Blendtec or Vitamix), place the frozen bananas and orange juice.   Blend to a thick ice-cream like consistency.  If you have a blender with an “ice cream” option, use that.  You may need to use a tamper to push the bananas into the blade as it blends.
  2. Add in the spirulina powder to the nice cream, and blend a few seconds to combine

Serve immediately, topped with your favourite toppings, such as coconut chips, fresh fruit, nuts, and seeds.

Or store in the freezer until ready to serve, however you’ll need to allow the nice cream to soften slightly before enjoying.

We topped our Spirulina Nice Cream with crunchy Hungry Buddha Coconut Chips, and a fresh slice of orange – green-white-orange – in honour our St Patty’s Day! 🙂
